What is BMI and should you know your numbers? Most of us are a little vague about what BMI is and what our numbers are. Lots of us don't want to know. The body mass index (BMI), is a statistical measure of the weight of a person based on their height.
It provides a simple numeric measure of a person's "fatness" or "thinness", and allows healthcare professionals to discuss over- and under-weight problems with their patients in a more dispassionate manner. In other words they can tell us we are overweight numerically rather than coming right out and saying it.
While it is probably a good thing to have an idea what your BMI is - don't attach any extra significance to the number. Basically it just took the place of the old life insurance tables we all use to hate. It's no more or less correct than they were.
